About Western Skies End-of-Life Veterinary Care
Dr. Lisa Burnett started Western Skies in 2019 as an independent veterinarian looking to make a positive difference in Fort Collins and surrounding communities by offering compassionate in home euthanasia services. It was important to her that families had the ability to provide a peaceful goodbye to their pets in the comfort of home and she was honored to serve thousands of families and their beloved pets in the northern Colorado area.
In 2024, personal circumstances changed and an out of state move was on the horizon. She was determined to keep Western Skies a small, local, veterinarian owned business. She and Dr. Emilea Burton crossed paths and it was clear she had found a capable and passionate veterinarian to take over Western Skies. Dr. Emilea Burton had already been working in the end-of-life veterinary space for 2 years and had an advanced certification in hospice and palliative care. She was also tech and business savvy and ready for the challenge of small business ownership. Dr. Emilea started working alongside Dr. Lisa in late 2023 and formally took over the business in early 2024.
Dr. Emilea is proud to continue the Western Skies legacy by continuing to provide personalized, kind, and compassionate care to pets and their families in need. Since 2023, Dr. Emilea has formed a partnership with a non-profit organization, Sugar’s Gift, that fully sponsors 2-3 appointments per month so that financial constraints are not a barrier to in home euthanasia care. She has continued to form strong partnerships with local veterinary hospitals so that they can confidently refer to her if they have families in need of home euthanasia services. Dr. Emilea has called Loveland home since 2015 and feels grateful to have such a meaningful way to give back to her community.
In late 2024, Dr. Emilea welcomed Dr. Kayla to the team to broaden availability and make sure families could get the help they needed. Dr. Kayla has completed specialized euthanasia training through the Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy (CAETA) and has received wonderful feedback from the hundreds of families she has served.
We have also had the same wonderful care coordinator, Emily, who has been the kind and loving first point of contact for families reaching out to us since 2023. She offers patience, reassurance, and personalized care when families are faced with this difficult decision. She also checks in with families after their appointments and connects them with additional grief support resources in our community.
Our story is one of a small handful of veterinarians and an animal lover turned care coordinator making a positive impact in our community during a difficult time. We are honored to make the end of life experience with a pet as peaceful and gentle as possible. Please know the end of life journey with your pet is not a walk you need to do alone and we are here to support you.
